On Sunday, at Zen
I kept time on the makugyo
for the first time
Somehow thinking about drumming
Made chanting easier
Until I made a mistake
Because then I made two
I also swept leaves from the path
The gentle early morning sun
And the rustle of leaves
Were just what I needed
